Autism is medical!

In the
Pediatrics Evaluation, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Disorders in Individuals With ASDs: A Consensus Report, some of the top Gastrointestinal and mitochondrial specialists in the U.S. concluded: The care of individuals who are nonverbal or have difficulties in communication or who display self-injurious behaviors presents special challenges. Nevertheless, the approach to evaluation and diagnosis of possible underlying medical conditions, in particular gastrointestinal disorders, should be no different from the standard of care for persons without ASDs. Management of co-occurring gastrointestinal problems in individuals with ASDs usually begins with the primary care provider and may eventually warrant multidisciplinary consultation.

Educate your child's doctor about the medical comorbid conditions that go along with a diagnosis of autism. At the next appointment, take along a copy or provide them with a link to the following publication, Medical Comorbidities in Autism Spectrum Disorders:

http://nationalautismassociation.org/pdf/MedicalComorbiditiesinASD2013.pdf

One in 32 children in Katy has been identified with
an autism spectrum disorder;

share the hope.
Medical Resources:
Many individuals with Autism have underlying medical problems.  Some of these include, gastrointestinal disturbances, seizure disorder, nutritional deficiencies, Cerebral Folate Deficiency, visual differences, mitochondrial dysfunction, encephalopathy, balance problems, allergies, and asthma.  This list contains practitioners that families in Katy use to address these issues.  Not all practitioners are in or near Katy.  Some practitioners are Medical Doctors (M.D.) including Psychiatrists and others are Physicians Assistants, Nurses, Dentists, Eye Doctors and Psychologists also Homeopathic Doctors and Chiropractors.

Published paper in the International Journal of Emergency Mental Health and Human Resilience, Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Emergency Department: Looking Beyond Behavior (ISSN: 1522-4821). First, treating symptoms instead of identifying a cause can lead to increased morbidity and mortality from an undiagnosed disorder. Second, antipsychotic medications can detrimentally affect glucose, cholesterol and lipids and weight, even in the short-term (Correll et al., 2009; Wink et al., 2014) and long-term anti-psychotic use increases the risk for type II diabetes (Bobo et al., 2013) and can result in tardive dyskinesia, a potentially permanent movement disorder (Correll & Kane, 2007). Thus, it may be best to look beyond the obvious of controlling behavior and understanding what the behavior means in order to solve potentially important medical conditions to improve the long-term health of a child with ASD. Several examples are given below of the medical condition that can present as behavioral dysregulation in children with ASD. Dr. Richard Frye Autism Research Program, Phoenix Children's Hospital, Neurology department.

Primary research interest involves the study of the natural history and the molecular characterization of mitochondrial cytopathies. There is cumulative evidence based on isolated cased reports and limited neuroradiological, biochemical, and molecular studies that mitochondrial dysfunction may be linked to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). It has been hypothesized that ASDs are prevalent in subjects with mitochondrial cytopathies. Treats Cerebral Folate Deficiency. https://www.bcm.edu/people/view/b17bf6de-ffed-11e2-be68-080027880ca6

Current thinking in bio-medical treatment is that when a child with the appropriate genetic susceptibility is exposed to a number of environmental insults, there are alterations in several body systems, the central nervous system (brain), the gastrointestinal system (the gut) and the immunological system (body defense), Autism may be the result.  We also tend to agree that the vast majority of the immune system is in the gut.  I am a certified colon therapist, offering colon hydrotherapy, biofeedback and sauna sessions in Cypress, TX, less than one mile from the Houston Premium Outlet Mall. My son, Matthew, is 18 years old and has autism and Lyme disease and these treatments have been key in bringing about dramatic improvements in his overall health, including his behaviors and communication skills.

Picky eating is often due to being addicted to wheat and dairy. The opiate-like compounds created from the improperly digested wheat and dairy proteins causes addictive cravings for wheat and dairy foods.  If your child is like most children with autism, they eat almost only wheat and dairy containing foods like: pizza, milk, bread, mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, as well as maybe a few snack foods like French fries.  There are many foods that are great substitutes for gluten (wheat) and casein (dairy).
