Occupational therapy is often used as a treatment for sensory integration issues associated with autism. It is used to help teach activities of daily living skills that involve fine motor movements, such as dressing, using utensils, cutting with scissors, and writing, as well as gross motor and motor planning.

Similar to OT, physical therapy is used to improve the individual's ability to participate in everyday activities. PT works to teach and improve skills such as walking, sitting, coordination and balance.

People with autism have deficits in social communication; speech therapy is an important treatment option. From using and understanding nonverbal communication to initiating an interaction with peers. Social skills can be extremely challenging for children with autism.

Social skills challenges are one of the defining diagnostic criteria of autism, they are a core area of focus for many therapists, parents and teachers.

Social understanding impairments in; social interaction (difficulty with social relationships, for example appearing aloof and indifferent to other people).

Social communication (difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication, for example not fully understanding the meaning of common gestures, facial expression or tone of voice).

Social imagination (difficulty in the development of interpersonal play and imagination, for example having a limited range of imaginative activities).

There are so many more modalities for treatment and early intervention, example equine assisted therapy, aqua therapy, listening therapy, Auditory Integration Therapy, music therapy, dance and drama lessons, piano lessons, gymnatics, etc. etc. Our children are not limited in their desire to participate fully.

One in 45 children in Katy has been identified with
an autism spectrum disorder;

share the hope.

We firmly believe individuals can learn the why, when, where, and how of social behavior, but they need the help and support of significant adults in their lives. Learning new behaviors and using them often enough for them to become habit requires patience and support from the family. Your child will make progress much faster when you take an active role in their learning. Raising a child with social behavior deficits is challenging and requires understanding, and above all patience. Our practical workshops and parent training classes are essential. They provide the knowledge needed to gain a better understanding of your child, and they will increase ability to manage behavioral challenges. In addition, you will have the opportunity to network with other parents struggling with similar issues, who will become valuable resources for you as you continue your journey with your child.

Little S.T.E.P.S. Preschool is a therapeutic preschool program based on the DIR developmental model and Floortime® strategies to promote social-emotional development in children. The DIR model focuses on 3 key elements in a child’s learning: Developmental levels, Individual differences, and Relationships. Little S.T.E.P.S. Preschool provides an environment that offers semi-structured problem solving, sensory based activities (motor, sensory, visual-spatial, perceptual), and child-directed play: each of these activities is aimed at promoting social-emotional development in each child.  Our ultimate goal is to help each child to relate, communicate, and think independently. Additionally, Little S.T.E.P.S. Preschool accepts children with neurological conditions and disorders (Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Apraxia, Auditory Processing Disorder, and Sensory Processing Disorder). The dedicated Speech Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists at MPTA utilize many therapeutic models, including DIR/Floortime, to treat all types of disabilities and issues.

Little S.T.E.P.S. Preschool:

  • Utilizes DIR/Floortime® approach
  • Helps children become more efficient and effective communicators
  • Addresses behavioral problems that interfere with learning and relationships
  • Serves children ages 2-5 years old who exhibit some use of verbal language, sustain back and forth interaction around a variety of objects, and are beginning to problem solve during interactions
  • Employs experienced licensed clinicians
  • Includes a parent education component

This movement produces weight bearing through limbs and joints, rotation of the pelvis, sensory stimulation, and strengthening and stretching of muscles. All are vital to a person with a disability as their exposure to physical exercise is often limited. Communication, therapy and educational benefits along with life skill development are also focused on in addition to learning equestrian skills. A 501(C)(3) Non Profit Organization.
